Harbhajan Singh Suspended from IPL

Harbhajan Singh, the controversial off spinner has temporarily been suspended from Indian Premier League. This decision was taken by the match Referee Farukh Engineer in context of the incident when Harbhajan Slapped SreeSanth.

Announcing the suspension, IPL Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi said that based on prima facie video evidence as seen and reviewed by the match adjudicator and referee Farokh Engineer from the tapes provided by Sony & TWI, a decision has been reached to suspend with immediate effect Harbhajan Singh of the Mumbai Indians pending the inquiry into the incident on Monday, April 28, 2008.

“The inquiry into the incident at Mohali in the game between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians will now take place at the Maurya Sheraton, New Delhi on April 28th, 2008. A final verdict would be announced by the adjudicator Farokh Engineer post hearing at New Delhi”, he said in a statement.

None of the spokes person or even Farukh Engineer gave any details of the video evidences. When asked if they have a video evidence of Harbhajan hiting Sreesanth, Lalit Modi said, usually the cameras work till 10 minutes after the match and there were many cameras working on the stadium. It seems as if one of the cameras actually captured the images of Harbhajan’s Action.

Harbhajan Singh and controversies always walked with hand in had. Harbhajan Singh has been in the spotlight more often for his controversies than his achievements. Harbhajan Sigh was one of those four players who faced one match ban in 2001 in South Africa for excessive appealing. In 2002 Harbhajan Singh was reported in a fight (if it can be called so) against the Gohati Police who denied a photographer to enter the team hotel. The photographer was a friend of Hrbhajan Singh which led to the incident. 2003 was a silent year for Harbhajan Singh because he was away from cricket because of fingure injury. He was back into controversies in 2006. This time it was because of an ad campaign he did for a liquor company. He did some photo sessions for the ad campaign without wearing the turban, with untied hairs. Sikh community agitated strongly against this advertisement. Harbhajan Singh publicly apologized for this incident to sve his neck. Harbhajan Singh openly supported Saurav Ganguly during the Ganguly - Chappel episode, laters he spoke in favour of Chappel. BCCI scolded Harbhajan Singh this time for his actions. 2008 Border - Gavaskar series was one of the most controversial overseas tour of India. Who can forget the incident that happened between Symonds and Harbhajan.

Finally, BCCI have taken the correct action by suspending Harbhajan Singh. Harbhajan might face a 10 match ban if found guilty.

In any case Harbhajan Singh wont be available to play in Sunday, April 27, 2008 match for Mumbai Indians against Hyderabad Deccan Chargers.
